Performance Improvement

The ACUTE CARE, INC. Performance Improvement (PI) Department staff includes a Board Certified emergency physician Medical Director and an Emergency Department Performance Improvement Coordinator registered nurse. The PI Department is responsible for all risk management activities related to Emergency Department physician directed and delivered medical care.

PI Department efforts focus on physician credentials review, including education, certifications, claims and jurisdictional body reviews, reference checks and practice history reviews. PI Department staff work closely with recruiting, credentialing and scheduling staff, including selected administrative personnel.

Additionally, interactions between facility representatives, including administrative, medical and nursing staff are a common occurrence. These interactions involve multiple matters, including standards of care, relational and interpersonal patient and professional staff interactions, medical record reviews and reporting, physician counseling, performance monitoring and disciplinary activities.

The PI Department staff also provides consultative services to our client hospitals related to policy, regulatory and medical legal matters. Facility site visits, including medical staff and Emergency Department meeting attendance are common occurrences. Also, the PI Department works closely with Professional Liability Insurance underwriters regarding policy issuance decisions, and also works with claims representatives and legal professionals regarding occurrence reporting, claims review and management.

An additional PI Department responsibility encompasses physician and nurse educational and performance monitoring activities involving Emergency Department medical record documentation and coding services.

The PI Department is proud of its accomplishments, takes seriously its responsibilities, and strives to assure that patients cared for by ACI contracted Emergency Department physicians receive appropriate, timely and quality medical care.
