Cardiac Arrest
Survival Act Passes
The Cardiac Arrest Survival Act was passed on Tuesday,
May 23, 2000 in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The Cardiac Arrest Survival Act instructs the Secretary of Health
and Human Services to make recommendations to promote public access to
defibrillation programs in federal buildings across the country. These
recommendations will help to ensure the health and safety of all Americans
by promoting ready access to the tools needed to improve cardiac arrest
survival rates. The bill also extends Good Samaritan protections to Automated
External Defibrillator (AED) users and the acquirers of the devices in
those states that do not currently have such provisions in place. This
protection will help encourage lay persons to respond in a cardiac emergency
by using an AED without fear of litigation.
