Video-Mediated Demonstration of Skill Practice: 10 minutes     

Video-mediated instruction of skills to be practiced in small groups: 10 minutes

  • Bag-mask rescue breathing using E-C clamp technique

  • One-rescuer

  • Two-rescuer

  • Two-rescuer infant CPR with two thumb–encircling hands compression

  • Endotracheal intubation with exhaled CO2 secondary confirmation

  • Demonstration of laryngeal mask airway (LMA)

  • Rhythms (10 seconds each)

  • Wide-complex tachycardia (for introduction of medications such as amiodarone or procainamide (not both)

  • Narrow-complex tachycardia (for consideration of vagal maneuvers in SVT)

  • Asystole (for de-emphasis of high-dose epinephrine)

  • Ventricular fibrillation (for rapid defibrillation and consideration of special resuscitation circumstances)

  • Torsades de pointes (for consideration of magnesium)

  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED) demonstration

Break: 10 minutes

Facilitated Skill stations: Practice of skills in small groups: 10 minutes per station plus switches

  • Basic Airway

  • Bag-mask rescue breathing using E-C Clamp technique

  • One-rescuer and Two-rescuer

  • Two-rescuer infant CPR: two thumb–encircling hands 

  • Advanced Airway

  • Endotracheal intubation with exhaled CO2 secondary confirmation

  • Demonstration of laryngeal mask airway (LMA)

  • DOPE mnemonic (Displacement, Obstruction, Pneumothorax, Equipment)

  • Rhythm

  • Introduction of vagal maneuvers (ice to face of infant)

  • Wide-complex tachycardia (for introduction of amiodarone or procainamide) 

  • Narrow-complex tachycardia (for consideration of vagal maneuvers in SVT)

  • Asystole (for de-emphasis of high-dose epinephrine)

  • Ventricular fibrillation  (for consideration of special resuscitation circumstances)

  • Torsades de pointes (for consideration of magnesium)

  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED) demonstration

  • Hands-on practice and caveats for <8 years

Putting It All Together: 15 minutes

Equipment for Rollout 

The rollout should be conducted at a maximum 8:1 student-instructor ratio for skill stations 

For each class you should have the following: 

  •    Video projector with screen or large screen TV for smaller groups

  •    VCR

  •    Data projector or overhead projector

  •    Laptop (if data projector is used)

  •    A large room capable of holding all attendees

  •    Appropriate breakout areas

  •    Standard precautions setups (gloves, eye protection)

  • Basic Life Support with manikin                                                                 

  • Pediatric and/or infant manikin

  • Self-inflating pediatric bag-mask rescue breathing apparatus including appropriate size masks

  • Suction apparatus

  • Advanced Airway

  • Self-inflating pediatric bag-mask rescue breathing apparatus including appropriate size masks

  • Pediatric intubation head or manikin

  • Endotracheal intubation equipment

  • Exhaled CO2 secondary confirmation (disposable required, capnometer optional)

  • Laryngeal mask airway (LMA)

  • Suction apparatus

  • Rhythm

  • Monitor/defibrillator (arrhythmia simulator)

  • Ice/water in plastic bag or disposable glove to demonstrate vagal maneuvers (ice to face of infant)

  • Infant manikin

  • Drinking straws

  • ECC Handbook opened to Pediatric Algorithms

  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED) demonstration

  • AED or AED trainer and electrode pads

  • ECC Handbook opened to AED page
